UNDERSTANDING HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS: PERCEPTION AND RISK AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN CALLAO, PERU

Abstract
Objective: To determine the relationship between the degree of knowledge and the perception of risk towards the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in secondary school students. Material and methods: Non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional study carried out in Callao-Peru in 2023. The study population included 100 students in the fifth year of secondary school in an educational institution in Callao, selecting a sample of 80 students. The relationship was assessed using Spearman's Rho. Results: Among the students surveyed, 61.2% showed a high level of knowledge about HIV infection, while 38.8% showed an intermediate level of knowledge. In terms of perceived risk of HIV infection, 51.2% of students perceived medium risk, and 48.8% perceived high risk. Conclusions: A significant and positive relationship has been identified between knowledge and perceived risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among fifth-year secondary school students in an educational institution in Callao. This correlation is evidenced by a Spearman's Rho of 0.918, which indicates a high positive relationship, and is reinforced by a p-value of 0.001, demonstrating its statistical significance.
